A sewage leak in London's Heathrow Airport has drenched about 100 suitcases in sewage water, according to The Independent.

A spokesman for the airport operator said: "There was a leak from the sewage system in the baggage area of Terminal 5 on Monday which affected around a hundred bags."

Passengers were forced to leave their luggage behind while the airport sent them to be cleaned. One source told The Sun, "The smell was absolutely foul, as was the mood of the passengers who had to leave without their bags." Many passengers are still waiting to have their bags returned.

The terminal, which accommodates flights from around the globe, is relatively new; it officially opened in 2008, but was built on a site previously occupied by a sewage works company. The incident and the terminal 's history has aroused fears that sewage issues could become a recurring problem.
