Things that feel like an eternity - a TSA line comprised exclusively of the elderly, traffic gridlock after a long day at the office, the last few days before a vacation.
Especially a nice long one. Long, being more than 10 days or so. Packing for such a trip can seem daunting, but it’s easier than you think. I’m going to show you how to pack for 10+ day trips, in just a carry-on. Yep, you read that right. Read on for my travel-savvy secrets...
Dress Yourself
While this rule is good for ANY trip, it rings especially true for long ones - wear every item you pack twice. Underwear and socks excluded, of course. Gross.
Most shirts and pants can be worn 2-4 times before needing to be washed. A polo or t-shirt (worn with an undershirt) can be worn twice, sweaters can be worn 3-4 times, and jeans can be worn up to 4 times before being washed (barring any spills or stains). For a two-week trip, you’ll want to pack 3-4 pants (or shorts, depending on your destination), 6-7 shirts, and seasonally appropriate pieces. Pack a jacket or coat if it’s chilly at your destination, or swimsuits and sunglasses in case you’re headed for hot weather.
Every item should match with each other. Pack complementary color families - black and gray, navy and gray, tan and brown. Dark jeans and bottoms will always be stylish and hide many stains, and will match shirts of virtually of all colors.

Launder On The Go
- Fill up your sink halfway with hot water. Add shampoo or body wash to create a sudsy water.
- Toss 3-5 small items (depending on the size of the sink) into the hot water and let them sit for a minute or two. Massage the clothes in the hot, sudsy water and drain the sink.
- Wring each item under hot running water until the soap has been completely washed out.
- Hang the items to dry on your shower rod or laid flat on a clean towel.
